If you’re a follower of Jesus, you’re a priest! The Church is a new priesthood, different from the priesthood of the Old Testament. Jesus Christ is our High Priest who leads us in offering our lives in worship as a living sacrifice to God. We also serve God as priests in His temple (the Church) by using our spiritual gifts (which all Christians are given when they trust Jesus) for the Church’s good and God’s glory. Spiritual gifts are one way God equips the Church for the life and work He calls us to. These gifts range from essential gifts (qualities given to all believers everywhere that are necessary for living the Christian life) to miraculous (or dynamic) gifts (specific abilities given for the distinct purpose of delivering or validating a message from God) to functional gifts (roles and abilities needed for the ongoing structure and ministry of the church). While the gifts we have within the Church vary, they all share one distinctive quality: they come from the Holy Spirit.
LIVE. One practical way to understand and apply the Bible is the SOS method. Ask…
S: What does this passage say about God, and what does it say about me?
O: What am I being invited to obey?
S: What can I share with those around me?
PRAY. Pray for yourself, a family member, a lifegroup/church friend, someone who doesn’t know Jesus, and the nations. Pick one each day or pray through them all every day.
