THINK. A Thought from Jessica Glenn…
Today, we read about three generations of kings who reigned in Jerusalem. King Hezekiah strove to obey God although imperfectly at times and chose to humble himself before God when he had made a mistake. His son, Manasseh, despite growing up watching his father follow God, chose to practice evil in some horrible ways. Through a sequence of events that left Manasseh and Jerusalem in a very low state, he recognized the error of his ways and repented before the Lord. Repentance can seem like a big word and may seem either overused or not used at all in church settings. But the Bible is full of God’s response to humility and repentance. Repentance is a sincere grief over things done and later in the New Testament, when repentance is talked about, the Greek word ‘Metanoia’ is used which is a turning and complete change of heart and way of living. Before we come to a place of repentance, we need the Holy Spirit to bring conviction to our lives making us aware of the fact that we have sinned and done wrong before God. There’s no way we can or will change without coming face to face with the truth of our need for being saved from our sin catalyzing us to repent and turn from sin to God done in humility. After reading the passages from today, I felt led to pray with hope and faith again for family and friends in my life who have grown up either in church or with a good model of what obedience to God looks like but have still chosen to walk away from God. This reading today gave me hope that even when we feel like all hope is lost or wonder whether someone will ever come back to God that it is possible through humble repentance and Jesus came to save the very worst of sinners. Join me in praying today for someone in your own life - a parent, sibling, son or daughter, friend, relative or neighbor - with fresh faith and hope for the Holy Spirit to convict leading to repentance and a turning back to God.
